Have you ever wondered how just one hour of your week could change lives?

For Janvi, an in-school mentor at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Niagara (BBBSN), this small commitment has made a world of difference for her mentees and herself. A student in Child and Youth Studies at Brock University, Janvi always wanted to make a positive impact. In March 2022, she seized the opportunity to apply her studies through BBBSN. What she didn’t anticipate was the lasting effect her mentorship would have, both in the lives of the children she guided and in her own journey.

Janvi was matched with three young mentees, each facing their own challenges. Two of them were struggling with bullying, and through her support, Janvi saw them blossom.

“For such a small amount of time, you are making a difference in both the child’s life and your own life,” she shared. “I saw them develop mentally, regulate emotions, and express themselves.”

One of her most memorable moments came when her mentee, a boy she had previously watched playing chess, ran up to her with a beaming smile, saying, “I was hoping I would be matched with you.” The bond they built over weekly chess games became more than just a pastime. Their games became their tool, not only for strategy but also for creating a safe space where he could relax and open up.

This small, consistent time investment created a lasting impact, reminding Janvi that mentorship is about more than guidance, it’s about giving youth a safe space to be themselves.

“Youth is our future generation, and they need support. One hour a week can make a huge difference in that child’s life,” she said.

If you’re passionate about supporting the next generation, BBBSN provides all the tools you need; all that’s missing is you.
